Unwanted Hair Growth in Women
One of the easiest ways to get rid of excess hair today is by undergoing laser treatments. Both men and women have a variety of reasons for getting rid of excess hair. In women, an excessive growth of hair is often attributed to hormones, which, when out of balance, can be defined as hirsutism. A condition called polycystic ovarian syndrome, or PCOS, is a hormonal condition that leads to hirsutism, acne, issues with menstrual cycles, obesity, and diabetes. This kind of growth pattern caused by hormonal imbalances and hirsutism can lead to unwanted hair on a woman’s face, back or arms and mimics the same kind of hair growth that is seen in men.

Convenient Alternative for Women Who are Tired of Shaving

However, women who don’t like to consistently wax, shave or use depilatories often are interested in laser hair removal too. Therefore, lasers are also used to slow hair growth for women in areas such as the legs, back, underarm, face, and stomach, as well as along the bikini line.

Unwanted Hair Growth in Men
Razor bumps, and in-grown hairsMen who suffer from pseudofolliculitis barbae (PFB), or the ingrown hairs that are caused by shaving, often opt for laser treatments as well. On the facial area, lasers are proven to be effective when used on the neck, chin, sideburns, and above the lip. Men also often choose to have excess hair removed on the chest or back.

Laser Sessions
Sessions for laser removal are virtually painless and usually do not take any longer than 30 minutes at a time. In fact, patients can return to work the same day. The light energy that is used in hair removal only affects hairs that are in the growth phase. Therefore, treatment specialists recommend that patients undergo a total of six sessions, on average, to realize optimum results.

Minimal Side Effects
Blistered chin from hair removalPatients report that the treatment causes a slight burning sensation. To ease any discomfort, a topical anesthetic may be applied before the procedure gets underway. After a treatment, patients may experience swelling or redness. However, these symptoms soon fade after a short amount of time. In some cases blisters occur but they are rare, and more likely to happen to people with darker complexions. There is a chance of a change in skin pigmentation, but changes in skin color are rare and temporary.

When the Results are Seen
Patients who have undergone about four sessions generally see a substantial reduction in the amount of growing hairs, especially in large areas such as the back or legs. Initially, it takes a couple weeks before the hair completely sloughs off.

The Best Laser Hair Removal Candidates
People with darker hair and lighter skin generally respond the best to laser therapy. However, some lasers are available that are designed for patients with darker skin tones. Patients with naturally light-colored hair, or hair that is gray or white, may not be as pleased with the treatment results.

This is because the laser beam works by zapping the melanin or pigment in the follicle, Therefore, when  hair lacks this melanin or pigment, such as is the case of gray or white hair, the treatment does not provide all that satisfactory of outcome.

In this instance, gray-haired and white-haired people are better off choosing traditional hair removal methods, such as electrolysis, shaving, or waxing. Electrolysis is the only permanent and effective way to remove white or gray hairs.
