Link Building Tips and Tools to Increase Your Page Rank
 If your goal is to obtain as much search engine traffic as possible then you
need to understand how search engines work.
This article will discuss tips on how to increase Google's PageRank for your
website through various tools and techniques.
What is PageRank?
Pagerank (or PR) is the rank popularity of a given page on the world wide web.
Google assigns a page rank to virtually every page that their spider bots crawl.
Pagerank determines the strength of a page according to Google, when a page has
a higher rank, then that page will be listed higher in Google's search engine
rankings
(and probably other search engines as well). Pagerank is a value from 0
(weakest) to 10 (strongest). Not many sites on the Internet have a pagerank of 10, at the time of this writing there is about a dozen pages that do
have a 10, the only notable website that has a 10 is Twitter, followed by a
bunch of government websites and adobe reader's page. Google.com and
Facebook.com themselves used to have a 10, but now they are floating at a 9, but
nobody really knows why for sure, as they are the two most popular pages on the
internet.
Why do I Need to Know Page Rank for SEO Purposes?
Knowing the pagerank of pages is important in SEO, because you can direct the
flow of someone else's page rank into yours by obtaining backlinks (regular text
links) on their site to your own site. Pagerank is essentially a linking
analysis algorithm developed by Google. The internet is just a big web of
links, the more links that flow into certain areas then the higher pagerank (or
some like to say Link Juice) that area will become. Here is an example of
how pagerank flows around the web (note that the bigger bubbles would have
higher page rank):
Just like the smell of cow manure on a farm is just like the smell of money to a
farmer, Link Juice (or PageRank) is the smell of money to a web marketer!
If you can grab the Juice (pagerank) of another website and direct it to your
own website, then you can turn that into money with your own site! So
understanding how to obtain page rank for your own site is crucial for obtaining
organic search engine traffic. So it is important to be able to see the
pagerank of other sites to see if it's worth your time in the first place to try
and obtain links there or not!
How can I see the PageRank of Sites?
That's simple, all you have to do is download a PageRank addon (or extension)
for the web browser you are using. Both the two most popular web browsers
(FireFox and Chrome) have many 3rd
party addons and extensions that show you the page rank of sites.
Google updates the pagerank of sites periodically (not every day), it usually
takes an average between 1-2 months for pagerank changes to occur. So as you
obtain links from other sites, don't be surprised if it takes a couple of months
for your pageranks to change.
General Tips and Tools for Improving Your Page Rank
For improving the pagerank of your own site, you first need to have a
good
understanding of SEO, then you can follow the tips below for obtaining
proper backlinks from other websites, which will ultimately help to increase
your pagerank:
You want to obtain links from higher authority sites and not from sites
that have horrible content and pagerank. If you get links on spammy sites,
or sites with little pagerank, it could actually hurt your own site.
 Learn what NoFollow and DoFollow links mean:
DoFollow - This means that search engine bots ARE allowed to follow
these links and pass pagerank on. These are the type of links you
really want to get and look out for. These are the good links!
NoFollow - These links have the rel="nofollow"
tag in them. This makes it so search engine bots are NOT allowed to
pass pagerank on. These are
very weak neutral type links and they will not help with increasing
your site's pagerank.
To easily find out which links are DoFollow or NoFollow, I highly recommend
obtaining a NoDoFollow extension/addon for the browser you are using. At
this time
FireFox has an excellent add-on available for it that you can use to quickly
tell if links are DoFollow or NoFollow. I'm not sure if chrome has one or
not.
After installing the NoDoFollow extension for the Firefox browser, right-click on the page somewhere and choose
the "NoDoFollow" option. This toggles the NoDoFollow function on or
off, this will basically show you which links are
DOFOLLOW (the blue
colored links), and the NOFOLLOW (the red colored links).
When viewing sites for determining if you want to get a link there,
first figure out what kind of site it is and where you could obtain a link
from. Is it a blog, forum site, directory site, article
site, or something else? Then determine if the links there are
NoFollow or DoFollow. Obtaining links from sites that allow DoFollow links
are ideal. Here are some tips for obtaining links on
these types of sites:
Blogs
 With blogs you can try to obtain
comment links. The problem with this is, most comment links for blogs
are NoFollow links. You can still attempt to get
a few blog comment links for general clickable traffic on that link, but it
will be useless for SEO purposes. You can also attempt to contact the
webmaster of a blog site and ask him/her if you can write up an article for
them with your link embedded into the article. These Guest Post links can be
really strong links for your site if you chose a popular non-spammy blog
site.
Forums
 Forums is one of my personal favorite
ways of obtaining backlinks, and I've had a lot of experience and success in
this area. With forums, register at many as you can that pertain to your
website's niche market and simply start making genuine posts with people.
You can obtain links from two main ways with forums. With signature links or
actual message links. Message links are a bit more powerful than signature
links, but they are harder to obtain because you would need to post the link to
everyone in the message body without looking like you are spamming. To see
quickly if a forum uses NoFollow or DoFollow links, turn on the NoDoFollow
extension for your browser, then simply browse around posts that have a lot of
replies and go through them looking for other people's signatures and links to
see if they allow DoFollow links.
Don't Look Like a Spammer
Not looking like a spammer is the key to obtaining links from forums.
Almost all forums have moderators that delete posts/users that look spammy.
So with forums you need to take your time and keep making good posts with people and your
signature link will appear giving you a free backlink. Moderators will not
ban you as long as you are genuinely making proper posts with the forum
community, and that your site is not a spammy site.
Some forums require that you need a certain number of posts
before they allow you to show your signature. In this case,
you first want to see what the page rank of the root of the forum
is. Generally, if it's more than 3, then I think it is a very good idea
to go ahead and keep making legit posts until you reach that limit!
In most cases, all your previous posts will all have the signature
to show once you've made the given forum's post # requirement.
Also I would not do more than like 5-10 posts
per day when working your way up to achieve those posts. You
want to not look like you just came to the forum to hurry up and get
links, so take your time and do not look like a spammer.
Knowing whether to use message links or
signature links: After registering on a forum, the first
thing you should do is search for the option to change your
signature. You then make a signature to the link you are going to
promote on there.
Signature links are much easier to get than
message links because you can reply to virtually anything and make a
comment about something and then the signature link will appear.
A lot of times forums will not give you the
option to make signatures (or to make them with new accounts), in
this case you need to work your way up to the required post amount
for you to allow signatures. You could also go all in and
attempt to make a message link if you don't plan on "sticking
around". Message links are harder to get and also can take more time to get.
Because you will have to find a reliable spot to make a post/reply
to something that you strongly feel like you are helping everyone
out there and most importantly not looking like a spammer..
Directories
Getting links in Directories used to be the thing in the 80s and 90s, as the
world wide web was just starting to get developed, search engines weren't a
viable option then, so directories was the way to get traffic to your site.
Overtime directories faded away in favor of search engines, but directories are
still in use today for you to list your site in hopes to increase your page
rank.
There has been a lot of controversy about directories and their future.
Many feel like they are dying and will not help a site at all into the future
for obtaining page rank. Some feel that directory links may even hurt your
site, as they feel like with directories the only people getting links for
directories are the site's owners themselves. Search Engines like to see
natural linking from sites that go viral naturally. No one is going to
naturally share your site on a directory. And because of this, I avoid
most directories. And as the
future of the web evolves I think this is going to become more prevalent.
Does this mean you should stay away from directories? I don't know for
sure. No one really has an exact answer. But if I was a search engine, I
would look down on directory links and count them as neutral links only.
However I do believe there are a few directories out there that are worth
submitting to. Any directory that is human edited and very popular are the
only ones I would recommend submitting to, and I do think they can help your
site slightly. Directories that accept ANY site are the ones I would
avoid. Here are the top directories I recommend submitting to:

This is the #1 directory I would suggest trying to get
into. It is hard to get a site listed in this directory.
They only choose sites that are really good and useful for people.
Also new sites will hardly ever be accepted in the DMOZ, so you may have
to wait a few years before your site develops in order to get accepted.
This directory is well respected by Google and if you happen to get in
this directory it will most likely increase your pagerank and domain
authority. |

Another respected directory by Google. I think it
is a bit easier to get into this directory, however it will cost you an
arm and a leg! The price amount is very high and there are no
refunds if your site is not accepted. I say if you have the extra
cash and you believe your site is good enough then go ahead and submit
here. |

This is another respected directory by
Google (at least people say), but probably not as much as the previous
ones mentioned above. It is really expensive to be listed here. I
personally avoid this directory for two reasons. One, it is simply
too expensive to be listed here ($300 yearly). And two, they
generally accept almost any site, and because of that, I think that is
what makes a poor quality directory. Directories that accept any
site should be frowned upon. However this is my 3rd most
recommended directory, mainly because so many others recommend this
because they say that Google does indeed like it. But I do not
know for sure! |

This directory has been around since 2001
and is pretty popular. Only costs $40 to get reviewed, however your site
may be rejected and the $40 is non-refundable, so make sure your site is
of decent quality before submitting first. |
You cannot judge PageRank by it's Cover!
 Is there more to PageRank that Google is not telling us about?
There could be more layers to page rank that Google is not sharing with us. Check out these 2 examples to see what I
mean:
First example: I've noticed I can get a page with a PR of 4 by having only one
page point to my site with a PR of 5 (and no other backlinks). But the bad part
is that all the subpages in my site would be weak
with a page rank of 1s and 0s.
Second example: I can also achieve a same page rank of
4 by having hundreds of
pages pointing to me with page ranks between 0-2. But the subpages of my site
are stronger with 3s
and 4s, and even deeper down they still have 1s and 2s.
As you can see here, the first example has a much weaker PR of 4 than the second
example's PR of 4. When you have more sites pointing to yours, it is
stronger than just one site, even if that one site has a higher page rank.
You need to obtain a lot of links from many different places in order for your
site to become stronger with higher authority.
You should check out subpages within sites to see how strong the preceding
page rank really is.
Also, there is another metric (other than pagerank) that is just
as important to note when giving the SEO value of a site, and that is Domain
Authority. You can lookup "Domain Authority Checker" on Google and you
will find tools that will show you the domain authority value of websites.
Acquiring links from high domain authority sites might be even more important
than the pagerank value of a given page.
Bottom line is I strongly think that you shouldn't always judge
a link merely by it's pagerank.
This really comes in handy in any situation, whether it be forums, blogs, etc.
So keep this in mind!
Conclusion
Pagerank is essentially the Internet's currency, as obtaining much as you can of
it can help you easily to turn it into money for you in the long run.
These tips and advice should be enough to help you get started to build high
quality backlinks to your site so you can ultimately get more organic search
engine traffic overtime!
